Cable car accident in Italy – gondola is to be removed

by time news

Almost five months after the cable car accident in northern Italy, in which 14 people died, the crashed gondola is to be removed. It will be removed from Monte Mottarone in Piedmont on October 15, a committee of experts and lawyers decided on Wednesday in the court in Verbania near Lake Maggiore. An important connector on the pull rope that is stuck in a tree is to be salvaged by the fire brigade next Monday.

The gondola is still not recovered

The cause of the accident is still not clear. The investigation continues. On Pentecost Sunday (May 23), shortly before the mountain station, the cable of the cable car, which was occupied by 15 people, broke. At that moment, the emergency brakes on the suspension cable should have applied. According to previous investigations, however, these were blocked with brackets because they are said to have caused disruptions during operation.

The gondola rushed downhill, jumped out of its anchorage on a cable car support and crashed to the ground. 14 people died. Only a little boy from Israel survived. In the accident he lost his parents, great-grandparents and a brother. The investigations are now directed against two companies and a total of twelve people.

According to a report in the Turin newspaper “La Stampa”, disciplinary proceedings have meanwhile been opened against the president of the competent court in Verbania and a judge there who was responsible for the case. The paper relied on a communication from the Attorney General of the Court of Cassation. This accuses the two of them, among other things, of a lack of professional care and misconduct towards other judges.
