A new self-reliant literary agency, Solas Literary, has launched, founded by publishing veteran Camille Burns. The agency will represent fiction and non-fiction authors across adult, young adult, and children’s categories, prioritizing long-term career progress and strong storytelling.
Solas, derived from the Gaelic word meaning “light” or “comfort,” aims to embody a philosophy of clarity, care, and collaborative partnership with its clients. The agency’s formation signals a growing trend toward author-centric representation within the publishing industry.
A Return to Core Values
According to a company release,Burns expressed a desire to create a more intimate agency environment. “After years working within established agencies, I wanted to create a small, independent space that reflects my approach to author care, one rooted in trust, editorial rigour and long-term vision. Solas represents both a fresh start and a return to what drew me to agenting in the first place.”
This move comes after Burns’s recent tenure at Diamond Kahn & Woods Literary Agency – which recently rebranded as the bryony Woods Literary Agency. She brings a wealth of experience to her new venture, having previously held positions at Hodder Education, Routledge, Bolinda Audio, Felicity Bryan Associates, and David Higham Associates.
Strategic Partnerships and Support for Emerging Writers
solas Literary will collaborate with Apple Tree Literary for back-office and administrative functions, streamlining operations and allowing Burns to focus on client advocacy. Emily Randle at Randle Editorial & Literary Consultancy will manage foreign rights for adult titles, expanding the agency’s reach into international markets.
Recognizing the challenges faced by aspiring authors, Solas Literary will also offer a monthly editorial consultation program. This initiative is designed to provide emerging writers with obvious and accessible feedback on their work. Burns’ existing client list includes authors Rebecca Orwin, Sarah Beth Durst, and CBBC presenter Joe Tasker.
Industry Leadership and Commitment to Mentorship
