Gemini App Redesign Consolidates Model Switching for Enhanced User Control

Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini, is receiving a significant user interface update that streamlines model selection, bringing the functionality directly into the prompt bar across web, iOS, and Android platforms.

Google is rolling out a redesigned interface for its Gemini application, focusing on improved accessibility and control for users. The update centralizes the model switcher – allowing users to select between different AI models like “2.5 Flash” and “2.5 Pro” – directly within the prompt bar. This represents a shift from previous iterations where the model picker was located in different areas depending on the platform.

Streamlining Model Selection Across Platforms

Previously, on Android and iOS, the model picker appeared below the “Gemini” label in the app’s top bar. On the web version, users found the menu in the top-left corner. The new design aims to create a more consistent and intuitive experience.

According to a company release, the updated mobile apps now position the model switcher in the bottom-right corner of the screen, alongside features like Gemini Live and voice input, which now features a circular microphone icon. The web version adopts a straightforward “Choose your model” dropdown menu. A subtle but noticeable improvement includes a larger font size within the model selection sheet.

Enhanced User Experience and Flexibility

The redesign isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about functionality. One analyst noted that centralizing controls at the bottom of the screen improves reachability, particularly on mobile devices. More importantly, the change allows users to switch between models within the same conversation, offering greater flexibility and control over the AI’s responses.

“This update allows for a more fluid and dynamic interaction with Gemini,” a senior official stated. “Users can now tailor the AI’s performance to specific tasks without interrupting their ongoing dialogue.”

Beta Release and Future Updates

The Gemini model switcher redesign is currently being widely rolled out to users on the web, iOS, and Android, and is available with Google app version 16.42 – currently in beta. While the rollout is extensive, it’s still considered a beta release, suggesting further refinements and updates are likely on the horizon.

The update underscores Google’s commitment to continuously improving the Gemini experience and providing users with greater control over its powerful AI capabilities.
