In France, about 2 million people are carriers of this malformation without knowing it. Fortunately, the risk of rupture is low.
«A clap of thunder in a serene sky», «a bomb exploding inside the skull»… Even the strongest of images is not enough to describe the drama, as brutal as it is unexpected, that a ruptured cerebral aneurysm represents. Each year in France, approximately 6,000 people are victims of it. Half will be taken care of in time, the others will die before reaching the hospital. What is this phenomenon due to? Can we prevent it?
«An aneurysm is like a hernia on a bicycle inner tube. The wall of an intracranial artery dilates abnormally and this causes the formation of a blood bag which, under the combined effect of blood pressure and the fragility of the arterial wall, can rupture», explains Pr Pierre Amarenco, neurologist at the Bichat hospital (Paris) and President of the association Vaincre l’AVC.
Silent aneurysms
Without knowing it, many people are carriers of this malformation which develops during life. “In France, around 2 million people…
