If the umbrella were invented today, it would instantly become a big thing. Something similar happened a good 20 years ago when the Ugg boot suddenly appeared. A young Australian surfer came up with the idea for the shoe in California in 1978 and made the Ugg popular there in the 1980s as a model to warm up feet after training that had been cooled down by the Pacific Ocean. But when Oprah Winfrey raved about Ugg at the beginning of the noughties and Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Katie Holmes, Blake Lively and other stars of the time wore the slip-on boots, they became a first-class must-have overnight.

It could be that easy with winter boots: slip on Ugg boots for guaranteed warm feet in this cozy lambskin cave. These were also the years when skinny jeans came onto the market, in keeping with the great slimming craze at the time; The fact that the legs looked a little more delicate in the thick boots only fueled the hype. Uggs in winter suddenly became as present as an umbrella in the rain.

Cut the ancient Ugg to size

But it was just a fashion item, and according to the rules of fashion, it had to come to an end at some point. Almost as quickly as the Ugg became a trend, it suddenly seemed uggly, predictable and uninspired. People with style turned to other models: simpler Chelsea boots, moon boots, most recently Blundstones and boots with thick tread soles.

So it was only a matter of time before the fashion wheel of fortune had to return to Ugg. In the past few weeks you didn’t have to freeze for long at an inner-city Christmas market to spot two, three, four pairs of Uggs in a few minutes, mostly in brown and usually in the Mini style – probably the second most popular at the moment, right behind the Mini with a platform sole, as Bella Hadid wore it in shorts weather in New York in September 2022. And because many people still have ancient Uggs with significantly higher shafts in their basement, videos are circulating on Tiktok showing how even these models can be cut into mini Uggs.

So is this comeback a quick thing for the few weeks of frost that can still be expected this winter, or will the Uggs have the belated honor of becoming a classic – à la Birkenstock, where they have achieved exactly that with comparable aesthetic explosive power ? After all, they have proven themselves for the second time in modern fashion history. Because they are almost as practical as an umbrella.
