Cardinal Tomko was canonized at the age of 98

Cardinal Yosef Tomko, former head of the Archdiocese of Evangelization, passed away at the age of 98 on August 8th at 5 am Italian time in Rome.

Cardinal Tomko of Slovakia was the oldest of the cardinals. He was elevated to the rank of Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1985.

Cardinal Thomko, who was admitted to Urom Gemelli Hospital on June 25 this year due to a neck injury, returned home on August 6 this afternoon. The Sisters of Saint Vincent the Paul who cared for him continued to care for him.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of the Triune Church, visited Cardinal Tomko at the hospital.

The Slovak Synod of Bishops, which issued a statement on the death of Cardinal Tomko, said that they pray for the repose of the cardinal’s soul and that the details of his funeral mass in Urom and then in Košice will be announced later.

Following the ordination of Cardinal Tomko, who turned 98, the total number of cardinals in the diocese is 206. Of these, 116 are under the age of eighty who are eligible to elect a new pope.
