Carlos García, a 46-year-old farmer from Otur (Valdés), was unanimously elected the new president of the Campoastur agricultural cooperative. He takes over from María Cruz Fernández, who was in charge of the company since it was created ten years ago as a result of the merger of several Asturian cooperatives. “We took the right path,” the outgoing president proudly said in her emotional farewell. He hands over the helm of Campoastur with 7,268 partners, 190 employees and a turnover last year of almost 83 million euros.

“We will bet on continuity,” said Carlos García after being elected president at the general assembly, held in Las Caldas. The closure of farms, the sharp increase in fodder prices due to the drought and the lack of specialized labor to work on the farms are the main concerns with which he begins his mandate. “We find it difficult to find people who want to work in the fields and, above all, who have the training for it,” said García, who has been in the livestock sector for 25 years and was one of the founders of the Chaca cooperative. now integrated into Campoastur.

In 2022, Campoastur obtained a profit of 354,645 euros, which represents an increase of 0.5% compared to the previous year and this despite the fact that turnover grew by more than 19%, to 82,988,523 euros. “To a large extent it was due to inflation,” said Marcelino González, general director of Campoastur.

The cooperative launched organic milk packaged under the Campobio brand in 2022 and recently launched its first organic blue cheese. “The intention is to advance in this organic market niche with more products,” said the new president.
