Category B License: Drive Larger Cars Now | January 2024

European Union drivers will soon have more options when it comes to the size of vehicles they can operate with a standard driver’s license. Starting January 1, 2026, the weight limit for vehicles drivable with a Category B license will increase from 3.5 tons to 4.25 tons, and in some cases, even up to 5 tons.

A Category B driver’s license will soon allow drivers to operate larger vehicles.

The change aims to accommodate modern vehicle technologies, particularly the added weight of electric car batteries. However, additional training or exams may be required when these new regulations are implemented into national laws.

What Drivers Need to Know About the License Changes

For those currently pursuing a Category B driver’s license, the learning process and exam requirements will remain unchanged. Aspiring drivers will continue to study and pass the exam according to existing standards.

These changes don’t affect how you *get* your license, but rather what types of vehicles your license allows you to drive afterward.

The Council of the European Union also recently decided to make vehicle technical inspections more flexible. For vehicles over 10 years old, the inspection interval will extend to every two years, offering convenience for vehicle owners. These amendments, taking effect in January, are designed to modernize traffic regulations and broaden the scope of the Category B driver’s license.
