CWith the intention of continuing the debate on the Right to Property, a fundamental human right, Cedice Libertad promotes the series of conferences “Critical Property Issues”, where Venezuelan and Latin American academics will present various theses throughout the month of March. In the first talk, the Argentine lawyer and university professor Ricardo M. Rojas presented the conference “inflation as a crime”, the subject of one of his most recent publications.

Dr. Rojas summarized the main aspects of his work and maintained that “inflation is the worst crime that a government can commit, since the ordinary citizen is the one who is most harmed by rising prices. For this reason, this phenomenon is a clear crime against the human right to property, because it destroys the ability of citizens to have purchasing power and quality of life”.

He referred to the case of Argentina, where inflation is one of the highest in the world. He revealed that the rulers do not want to discuss this issue, “because they have no limitations regarding the issuance of public spending to finance themselves.”

He said that many governments print more paper money to pay their debts without taking into account the perverse effects that this policy will bring.

“If governments stopped issuing money, inflation would end. This is what happened in Argentina in the 1990s, when the currency board was established. Crime is renewed when they continue issuing money instead of facing the real problem, which is public spending,” explained Ricardo M. Rojas.

The also professor at the Francisco Marroquín University believes that public officials are responsible for inflation “the fault of the increase in prices is not the merchant, bank or speculator,” he said and added that the responsibility lies with those who develop public policies that encourage price rises.

It should be noted that the cycle of talks is coordinated by the Cedice Libertad Property Rights Observatory together with the Ludwig von Mises Institute of Venezuela and moderated by Professor Andrea Rondón, a member of its academic committee. Intellectuals such as Martín Krausse, Roberto Hung and Antonio Canova will be the next speakers with the topics “Property in literature”, “property and the blockchian” and “property and education”.
Dr. Martín Krausse will be the speaker next Wednesday, March 8, with the talk “Property in literature.”

For more information, those interested in participating in the talks, via virtual on Wednesdays March 8, 15 and 23 at 4 in the afternoon, will obtain information through www.cedice.org.ve
