India’s Batting Collapse on Day One of Boxing Day Test Against South Africa

The Boxing Day Test between India and South Africa got off to a rainy start, which delayed the game due to dampness on the pitch. After the start was delayed, South African captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and sent India into bat.

Despite a late start, India’s batting performance left much to be desired as they collapsed to a score of 208 for eight on the first day of the test match. India’s score crossed 200, thanks to the outstanding batting of KL Rahul, who managed to remain not out at 70 runs. However, Kagiso Rabada’s five wickets for 44 runs proved to be a major impediment for the Indian batting line-up.

Rohit Sharma was the first to be dismissed, scoring just five runs. This set the trend for the rest of the Indian team, with Yaswaswee Jaiswal and Shubman Gill also falling quickly, leaving India at a dismal 24 for three. It was then up to the Kohli-Iyer combination to stabilize the team, but Rabada struck again, breaking the partnership with Shreyas Iyer’s stump. Soon after, he dismissed Kohli for 38 runs, leaving India at 107 for five.

KL Rahul’s innings saved India from an even bigger collapse, as he took the score past 150 by partnering with Shardul Thakur for the seventh wicket. Thakur scored 24 runs, while Rahul remained not out at 70 when the game was stopped due to rain. R Ashwin was out for eight runs and Jasprit Bumrah for one run. For South Africa, Andre Berger took two wickets, and Marco Janssen took one wicket.

Pacer Prasad Krishna made his Test debut for India, receiving his Test cap from Jasprit Bumrah. Meanwhile, Andre Berger and David Bedingham made their Test debuts for South Africa.

The Indian team includes Rohit Sharma (captain), Yashaswi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, R Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Prasad Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammad Siraj. The South African team consists of Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Tony De Sorsi, Temba Bavuma (captain), Keegan Pietersen, David Bedingham, Kyle Vereyne (wicketkeeper), Marco Janssen, Gerald Coetzee, Kagiso Rabada, and Andre Burger.
