Cha Yeon-ju Secures Gold at National Sports Festival, Reviving Seoul’s Tennis Hopes

A dominant performance by 18-year-old Cha Yeon-ju has delivered a much-needed victory for Seoul at the 106th National Sports Festival, securing the gold medal in the women’s under-18 individual tennis event. This win marks Cha Yeon-ju’s first triumph at the prestigious national competition and represents the sole medal earned by Seoul in the under-18 tennis division this year.

A Decisive Victory in Busan

On Thursday,November 21st,Cha Yeon-ju showcased her skill and determination, defeating Nam Gyu-ri of Incheon (Seokjeong Girls’ High School) in a decisive 6-0,6-3 victory. The final match, held at the tennis court within Hwamyeong Ecological Park in Busan, saw Cha Yeon-ju immediately seize control of the game, establishing a commanding presence that continued throughout both sets.

Dedication and Distance: A Champion’s Routine

Cha Yeon-ju’s success is built on a foundation of relentless training. Despite residing in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, the young athlete undertakes a daily commute to Seoul Olympic Park via KTX to hone her skills at the ATA (Academy of Tennis Athletes). Notably, she is the only member of the ATA selected for the Seoul national under-18 team, which is primarily comprised of players from JoongAng Girls’ High School.

Redemption After Team Disappointment

Seoul entered the National Sports Festival as a strong contender in the team events, but faced unexpected setbacks, being eliminated from both the men’s and women’s competitions. With the team’s hopes dashed, all eyes turned to the individual exhibition, where Cha Yeon-ju carried the weight of Seoul’s aspirations. She ultimately delivered, preserving the city’s pride in the face of adversity.

“I am so happy to win the National Sports Festival,” Cha Yeon-ju shared following her victory. “There were many times when I faltered in the middle, but I am very grateful to my friends at Seoul (Jungang Girls’ High school) and teachers Kim Jong-myeong and Jeon Da-won who continued to support me. I am also very grateful to coach Joo-yeon Choi, ATA teachers, and my parents who always work hard for me even in normal times.”

A First Title and Grand Aspirations

This victory at the National Sports Festival represents Cha Yeon-ju’s first title since winning the Babolat Middle School Competition last year. The win is especially critically important as it comes at the nation’s largest sporting event. Looking ahead, Cha Yeon-ju has set her sights on even greater challenges.

“I still need to learn more,” she stated. “I will work hard step by step and someday I want to become a player who can participate in the Grand Slam qualifiers.”

Nam Gyu-ri, while a formidable opponent, appeared visibly nervous at the start of the match and was unable to replicate the strong performance she displayed in the semifinals. As a result, Incheon was unable to secure the under-18 individual event title.
