The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 version of the zombie-slaying action game Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has been delayed, developer Dragami Games announced. The postponement, initially reported by GNN News, comes as the company also works to address significant revisions needed for the already-released Nintendo Switch version of the game. The Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Switch 2 release was originally slated for March 26, 2026, but will now arrive sometime in early 2026.
The delay is directly linked to a surge in demand for a physical release of the game. Dragami Games decided to push back all versions – digital and physical – to ensure simultaneous availability. “We apologize for the long wait and any inconvenience this may cause,” the company stated, according to GameSpot.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is a remake of the cult classic 2012 title, following cheerleader Juliet Starling as she battles hordes of zombies with her signature chainsaw. The original game, known for its over-the-top action and quirky humor, was co-written by James Gunn (now co-CEO of DC Studios) and directed by Suda51. Neither Gunn nor Suda51 were involved in the development of the remake.
Switch Version Trade-offs: Fidelity on Nintendo Hardware
While the Switch 2 version faces a delay, Dragami Games has been transparent about the challenges of bringing Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP to Nintendo’s hardware. CEO Sanda Anada explained on Twitter that the Switch version aims to match the specifications of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, but with some necessary compromises.
Notably, the Switch version will run at Full HD (1920×1080) resolution, an upgrade from the original game’s HD (1280×720) resolution. While, certain visual effects have been scaled back or removed entirely due to hardware limitations. Screen space reflections, for example, will not be present in the Switch version. Some effects, like chainsaw slash marks, are only partially implemented, initially appearing in boss battles against Zed, with a planned update to expand their presence throughout the game.
Despite these adjustments, Dragami Games has focused on optimizing lighting for each level and expresses satisfaction with the overall visual presentation. Anada noted that the original Lollipop Chainsaw’s aesthetic holds up well despite its relatively modest visual budget.
Frame Rate and Visual Fidelity
The game will maintain a frame rate of 30 frames per second on the Switch, consistent with the original release. Dragami Games has invested in optimizing the game’s lighting for each level, aiming for a visually appealing experience despite the hardware constraints. The developers acknowledge that players might question whether they are experiencing the best possible visuals, but suggest comparing the remake to the original game as played on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 for context.
Supporting older or less powerful hardware can be a challenge for developers, but Dragami Games views it as a way to broaden access to their game. “Providing this support means giving players who, for various reasons, cannot purchase the highest-end hardware a chance to play the latest games,” the company stated.
Addressing Issues with the Existing Switch Version
The delay of the Switch 2 version is also tied to the necessitate for “major revisions” to the existing Nintendo Switch version of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP. Details regarding the specific nature of these revisions remain limited, but the announcement suggests that Dragami Games is committed to improving the experience for players who already own the game on the current Switch console.
The remake, which launched on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC in 2024, features “the latest game graphics” and “faster chainsaw action,” promising a more fluid and engaging combat experience. The Switch version, while aiming for similar specifications, has clearly presented unique development hurdles.
Dragami Games has not yet announced a specific release date for the Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Switch 2 version beyond “early 2026.” Players can follow Dragami Games’ official X (formerly Twitter) account for updates: https://x.com/Dragami_Games/status/1989252238347567413.
