According to School Education Department rules, private matriculation schools operating in Tamil Nadu should have minimum land area as per local body area.
In corporations, 33 cents; In urban areas, 1 acre; In rural areas, 3 acres of land should also be available. Due to space constraints and economic reasons, the government has accepted the long-standing demand of private schools to relax these rules and the land rules have been changed.

* 3 plots of land for play school, nursery and primary schools in all places, whether village or town; That is, on a plot of 2,400, the area should be 7,200 square feet.
* For middle, high and higher secondary schools, in big cities like Chennai, 5 ground land should be available; For other Corporation Areas, 6 Grounds should be available
* In district capitals, 7 ground; 8 ground in municipal areas; For Municipality, 10 acres and for Gram Panchayat, 2 acres
* 10 square feet per student each; A space of 40 square feet should be allotted to the teacher in the classroom
* In PreKG, maximum 15 students per classroom; Maximum 30 students in each classroom from LKG to 5th; 6th to 8th standard maximum, 35 persons; From class 9 to plus 2, each classroom should have a maximum of 40 students.
* Ground rules for private schools have been relaxed as the basic structure, drinking water, toilet, library, laboratory, place for co-educational activities, ground etc. should be followed according to the rules.
The Directorate of Private Schools has directed the Principal Education Officers to inform the school administrators of these rules.
