Let’s see what are the powers of Charles III who has been crowned as the King of Britain.

In Britain the Queen or King is the head of state but their powers are merely ceremonial. Politically they can only be neutral. Documents requiring important signatures from the government, including letters, briefings for meetings, etc., are kept in a red leather box and presented to the king. He will sign it.

Usually on Wednesdays, the Prime Minister of the country meets the King at Buckingham Palace and briefs him on the affairs of the country. No information about these meetings will be published.

The leader of the party that wins the general election will be invited to Buckingham Palace. Then the king will invite him to formally form the government. The king will also formally dissolve the government before the general election.

The King opens the first parliamentary session of the year. He sits on the throne of the House of Lords and announces the future plans of the government. After the bill is passed by Parliament, it must be formally assent by the King to become law.

In Britain, the right of succession defines which member is appointed to that position. The first child of the king or queen is the first in line.

In 2013, the royal succession rules were amended. Accordingly, men and women were given equal rights of inheritance. That means sons do not get priority over their elder sisters.

Prince Williams-Suk, eldest son of King Charles, has been given the title of Duke of Cornwall. Prince William’s eldest child, Prince George, is second in line to the throne. Eldest daughter Princess Charlotte is third. Williams’ youngest son, Louis, is fourth in line of succession.
