A dedicated football supporter is undertaking a grueling cycling challenge – traveling to every away match of his team’s season – to spotlight the often-invisible battle against inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The ambitious effort aims to increase understanding and support for those affected by conditions like Crohn’s disease and colitis.
A man from Chertsey, Surrey, embarked on the challenge without initially knowing the full extent of the distances involved, driven by a deeply personal connection to the cause. He is supporting Crohn’s & Colitis UK with his endeavor.
A Personal Journey Fueled by Family
The cyclist’s first away trip with Chertsey Town FC covered 181 miles (290km) to Tiverton, Devon. The longest leg of the journey will see him cycle 260 miles (418km) to Plymouth Parkway. “It’s something I wanted to do for my dad,” he explained. “It affects him personally, the illness, so it’s just something I wanted to do for him.” This deeply personal motivation underscores the often-hidden impact of IBD on families.
Understanding Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Crohn’s disease and colitis represent the two primary forms of IBD, a group of conditions characterized by chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. According to Crohn’s & Colitis UK, approximately one in 120 people in the United Kingdom lives with either Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Common symptoms, as outlined by the National Health Service (NHS), include persistent stomach pain, diarrhea, unexplained weight loss, and debilitating fatigue.

Building a Community Through Awareness
The cyclist’s journey has already begun to foster a sense of community among those affected by IBD. “The more I’ve done this journey, the more people I’ve spoken to,” he shared with BBC Radio Surrey. “Although it’s a small amount of people, it’s a large community.” This observation highlights the importance of raising awareness to connect individuals facing similar challenges and reduce the isolation often associated with chronic illness.
When asked about the physical toll of the cycling, the fan offered a lighthearted response: “The beer helps to keep me awake.” Chertsey Town FC currently competes in the Southern League Premier South. This unique fundraising effort demonstrates the power of individual initiative in supporting vital health charities and fostering a greater understanding of IBD.
