When Karunanidhi was the Chief Minister, he introduced the practice of giving Pongal gift packages to the people of Tamil Nadu. I, one of you, know that that expectation is still with people today. That’s why the Dravidian model government announced that Pongal gift package containing one kg of rice, one kg of sugar and whole sugarcane will be given. I also learned that there was an expectation of payment in cash.
I considered the demand for cash disbursement even in the face of severe financial crisis. Sugar is sweet on the tongue. As cash is sweet to the heart, 2 crore 19 lakh 71 thousand 113 rice card holders are being given a Pongal gift package with Rs. The amount earmarked for this prize package with cash is Rs 2,436.19 crore. Also, 1 crore 77 lakh sarees and vetis are given to poor people as Pongal gifts by fair price shops this year before Pongal.

‘Everything for all’ is the basic tenet of the Dravidian model of government. A dictatorship that operates on the principle of ‘I am everything’ is anathema to democracy. After the 2024 parliamentary elections, a Union government that can remove such corruption and respect the rights of the states – and work on federal principles – should be in place for the flourishing of democracy.
The time has come to form a government that protects India’s diversity, cherishes religious harmony, is non-sectarian, non-linguistic and respects state rights. This Pongal Thirunal is an exciting opening ceremony.
