Following the ambitious scope of her 2023 album, Samson: The Album, which featured collaborations with music icons Stevie Wonder and Lin-manuel miranda, CHIKA delivers an EP defined by introspection and a renewed focus on her own artistic voice.

The genesis of “Wish You Were T(Here)” stemmed from a simple desire: to reconnect with the creative process. “I really had just missed sitting down and making music,” CHIKA explained. “I took a little break, and the first thing that I wanted to do…was to kind of update my fans on where I’ve been.” The recording process itself was described as experimental, a “throwing paint” approach to sound.
Central to the EP’s sonic landscape is the collaboration with producer Rahki, a partnership that proved instantly fruitful. “Every time I get a Rahki beat, it’s insane,” CHIKA recalled, highlighting the intuitive connection that allowed her to articulate her vision with ease. This collaboration, coupled with the incorporation of live instrumentation, resulted in a more rounded and nuanced sound, moving beyond the confines of customary Hip-Hop. Interestingly, this wasn’t their first encounter; CHIKA had previously written songs to Rahki’s unreleased beats, solidifying her desire to work with him.
While the success of Samson might have invited pressure to replicate its achievements, CHIKA approached this project with a different mindset. “Samson was my peak as I call it my magnum opus,” she stated, framing “Wish You Were T(Here)” as a new chapter rather than a direct sequel. This viewpoint allowed her to explore new emotional territories, notably in the wake of her father’s recent passing.
The loss of her father profoundly impacted the EP’s thematic core. “I think that being that it was my first real experience with grief directly like that, you kind of just hear it woven into the songs,” CHIKA shared. Tracks like “FLOAT” directly address memories and the rapid passage of time, serving as a poignant tribute to her father and a means of processing her grief. The project became a nostalgic reflection on the past decade of her life, a way to revisit cherished moments while her father was still present.
Unexpected influences also played a role in shaping the EP’s direction. The song “Friends” was directly inspired by Rebecca Sugar, the creator of Steven Universe. CHIKA noted that a specific transition sound from the Steven Universe movie was instrumental in the song’s creation, demonstrating the diverse range of artistic inspirations that fueled her work.
