A harrowing health crisis, including a stroke and subsequent heart surgeries, prompted Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, to cancel his tour last year. The multi-talented artist shared the details of his ordeal Saturday night during a performance at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles, offering a candid look at a challenging period in his life.
Glover, 42, initially described the issue as a general “ailment” when he announced the tour’s postponement. However, he revealed on stage that a medical professional diagnosed him with a stroke. “You guys voted for a ‘where have I been monologue,’” Glover recounted to the audience, as reported widely on social media. “I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana and I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.’”
A Deeper Health Struggle
The stroke was not the only medical challenge Glover faced. He further disclosed that doctors “found a hole” in his heart, necessitating two surgical interventions. While grappling with these health setbacks, Glover expressed feelings of disappointment, specifically mentioning his regret at not yet being able to perform in Ireland.
A Shift in Perspective
The experience prompted a profound shift in Glover’s outlook on life. “They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realize you have one,” he shared with the crowd. “You got one life, guys, and I gotta be honest, the life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing.” This sentiment underscores a newfound appreciation for his career and the connection he shares with his fans.
