The China Cybersecurity Authority has published bill, which provides for restrictions on the use of short-range Internet networks by citizens. These include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Air Drop, and similar wireless communication and file transfer technologies between devices.

The bill requires service providers to implement systems to monitor the data circulating through such networks and prevent the spread of illegal content. Users “should not use the service to publish or send illegal information, they should take measures to prevent the production, copying or distribution of unsolicited information and counteract it,” and if they receive such information, they are advised to contact the competent authorities.

In addition, the bill provides for the introduction of a ban on automatic connection of devices to networks, as well as the mandatory provision of personal data of device owners to network operators at each connection.

Thus, the Chinese authorities actually want to establish total control over wireless Internet networks. The move was a reaction to the fall’s mass protests against coronavirus restrictions, during which citizens actively shared videos and information among themselves via AirDrop and Bluetooth.
