China will host talks between the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and the Fatah movement on Palestinian unity, Reuters reported, citing the two organizations and a diplomat in Beijing.

The Hamas movement, which is based in the Gaza Strip, carried out an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7 last year. In the attack, Hamas fighters killed 1,200 people and took 253 hostages.

Israel vowed to destroy Hamas and launched a military operation in Gaza, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to Reuters, quoted by BTA.

Fatah is the movement of the president of the Western-backed Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas. The Palestinian Authority exercises limited self-government in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said today that he sees positive dynamics in talks to end the war in the Gaza Strip and to release Israeli hostages still held by Hamas, Reuters reported.

“I think there is a new attempt, which includes Qatar and Egypt, as well as Israel, to find a way forward,” Sullivan said in an interview with MSNBC.
