Chinese badminton players continued their strong showing at the Malaysia Open 2026, securing numerous spots in the quarterfinals on Thursday, January 8th. The tournament, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, saw top players like Shi Yuqi advance while others faced unexpected challenges.
Yuqi Outlasts Shetty in Thrilling Match
World No. 1 Shi Yuqi demonstrated his resilience, overcoming a tough challenge from India’s Lakshya Sen 21-18, 17-21, 21-15. The match was a display of aggressive net play and powerful smashes from both sides, with yuqi ultimately prevailing due to his superior consistency.
Antonsen Advances, Acknowledges Rising Competition
Denmark’s Anders Antonsen, a four-time World Championships medalist, also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Canada’s Victor Lai 21-16, 21-15. Antonsen acknowledged the physically demanding nature of the matches, noting the emergence of younger competitors. “It was very physical from the very start to the very end,” he stated. “I’m 28 and suddenly facing guys who were 18 last week… So I feel it’s very motivating for me.”
Chinese Women Shine in Singles and Doubles
The Chinese women’s team also enjoyed a prosperous day. Chen Yufei battled past Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 19-21, 21-12, 21-9, while her teammate Wang Zhiyi had a more straightforward victory against chinese Taipei’s Lin Hsiang Ti, winning 21-15, 21-8.
In women’s doubles, the pairing of Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning dominated their match against Japan’s hirokami Rui and Hobara Sayaka, winning 21-19, 21-9. the mixed doubles team of Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping also secured a quarterfinals berth, defeating teammates Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi 22-20, 21-16.
Quarterfinal Matchups Set, Focus on Adaptation
Looking ahead, Huang Dongping expressed her team’s eagerness to perform at their best. “I look forward to showcasing our level and capabilities to the fullest in every upcoming match,” she said. They will face fellow Chinese players Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui in the quarterfinals, after the latter overcame German opponents 13-21, 21-16, 21-10. Chen Fanghui emphasized the need for rapid adaptation, stating, “They came out with a lot of momentum… But in the second game, Guo Xinwa and I kept adjusting and mobilizing ourselves, and we managed to turn things around.”
The mixed doubles duo of Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin also progressed to the last eight.
Setbacks and Walkovers Amidst Success
Despite the overall success, some Chinese players faced setbacks. Lu Guangzu in men’s singles, the men’s doubles team of Chen Xujun and Liu Yang, and Gao Fangjie in women’s singles were eliminated from the tournament. Additionally, han Yue in women’s singles and the women’s doubles pair of Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian received walkovers. Chen Xujun acknowledged their relative inexperience as a new pair, stating they delivered a “steady performance” but require further refinement.
