“Chinese Stories 2” comprises nine self-reliant stories, each rendered in a distinct artistic style. The production, a collaboration between Shanghai Art Film Studio Co., Ltd., Shanghai Film Yuan (Shanghai) Culture and Technology Development Co., Ltd., Shanghai Kuanyu Digital Technology Co., Ltd.,and Chen Liaoyu Studio,delves into universal themes of human nature,emotion,and destiny through fables steeped in Eastern philosophy.
Among the featured shorts, “How to become three Dragons” follows a little snake’s journey toward immortality, exploring themes of self-discovery and growth. “the Man in the Ear” draws inspiration from the classic collection of supernatural tales, “Liao Zhai,” to examine hidden desires. Other narratives include “Today’s Zoo,” a reflection on individual choices within a fantastical setting; “Little Snow,” a delicate portrayal of familial bonds; “sanlang,” a tale of self-discovery amidst martial arts traditions; “Big Bird,” a dark fairy tale of guardianship; “Worship the Mountain,” blending Hakka folk customs with imaginative fantasy; “Xingtian,” a reimagining of an ancient mythological hero; and “The Great Noble,” a heartwarming story of father-son relationships.
Immersive Exhibition Brings “Chinese Wonderland” to Life
Complementing the animated series, the first national stop of the “Chinese Wonderland” dream-making art exhibition will be held in Shanghai from January 30th to May 5th. Jointly produced by Shanghai Film and Television and Damai’s “Art Exhibition Hongtu,” the exhibition will showcase over 300 creative materials and utilize immersive light and shadow installations to present the aesthetic core and creative process behind both seasons of “Chinese Stories.” The exhibition promises an artistic journey filled with fantasy and inventiveness for attendees.
Building the “Strange Tales Universe” IP
Since its debut in 2023,the “China Strange Tales” series has been strategically developed into a broader “Strange Tales Universe” intellectual property (IP). According to a company release, the series is actively expanding its content and aesthetic boundaries through interconnected stories. this approach is injecting meaningful momentum into the innovation of Chinese animation.
