Somerset, England – December 19, 2025 – While many are preparing for cozy Christmas celebrations, workers at horse racing yards across the country are gearing up for one of their busiest periods of the year. With 32 fixtures scheduled between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, the behind-the-scenes effort required to keep thes events running smoothly often goes unseen.

A Christmas Shift Unlike Any Other

The demanding schedule means horses need care and attention every day of the year, even on Christmas.

  • The jump racing season reaches a crucial point over the festive period.
  • Workers at David Pipe’s yard in Somerset face early starts and time away from family.
  • Despite the demands, staff strive to maintain a festive spirit.
  • Boxing Day is a notably popular date for racing meetings.

“The horses don’t know it’s Christmas Day. Work goes on as usual,” explains Sarah Bowen, who works at David Pipe’s yard. “We get up at 5 am, muck out the stables, feed the horses, and then start the day’s work. It’s a long day, but we all pull together. We all come in and we wear Christmas hats,” she said. “We usually come in a bit earlier and get it all done as quickly as we can so we can get home to our families.”
