LAUTERBACH, December 20, 2025 – Shocking details emerged in the trial of a landlord couple accused in the gruesome murder of a tenant in Lauterbach-Wernges, Germany. Testimony revealed both defendants suffered from severe depression, perhaps shedding light on the events leading to the dismemberment of 55-year-old Anja M. in January 2024.
The case continues to raise unsettling questions. Anja M. disappeared after renting a room from the couple, and months later, investigators discovered her remains in the basement of their property. The couple, now on trial since May 2025, face charges of grievous bodily harm and murder. Prosecutors allege months of abuse culminated in a fatal overdose of a psychotropic drug, though both deny the accusations. The male defendant has admitted to dismembering the body.
Perpetrator Severely Depressed
During a house search, authorities uncovered substantial quantities of painkillers, sedatives, and psychotropic drugs. Dr. medic. Radu Hociota, the couple’s psychiatrist as 2012, testified before the fifth major criminal chamber of the Giessen Regional Court. He described treating both defendants jointly, diagnosing them with severe depression and prescribing medication.
When questioned by presiding judge Regine Enders-Kunze, Dr. Hociota stated he typically prescribed medication in amounts sufficient for a single quarter. He expressed inability to explain the large quantities found and admitted he couldn’t verify consistent medication adherence.
The psychiatrist also stated the female defendant experienced feelings of being watched and reported hearing nonexistent noises. A further psychiatric evaluation, commissioned by the court, is pending to provide a more detailed assessment of the defendants’ mental states.
