Christmas: This year the fir trees are greener | Life & Knowledge

by time news

Spruce or fir – are you already thinking about which Christmas tree should decorate your apartment in the near future? There is one thing you can look forward to in any case: the strong color! Because: “The trees are a little greener than in previous years,” says Wolfgang Schuh from the Rhineland-Palatinate Forest Owners Association.

This is due to the fact that it rained more in summer 2021 than in the drought summers of previous years. The green leaves of the trees – more precisely: their needles – have stored more moisture. Therefore, you can probably stay indoors a few days longer before you start needling. The hard layer of wax that surrounds the needles also protects them from drying out.

It goes with the fresher trees that, according to the expectation of the Natural Christmas Tree Association, many people will set up a Christmas tree earlier this year than usual.

One reason is that due to the pandemic, many people work in the home office and then want to be comfortable at home in Advent, especially since the Christmas markets are canceled in many places.

Prices stay the same

By the way, the Christmas trees would not be more expensive this year, says forest owner Schuh.

“For one meter of a Nordmann fir, with an 80 percent market share, the most popular Christmas tree among Germans, the customer pays an average of 20 to 27 euros,” says Schuh. “So a 1.50 meter tree costs around 30 to 35 euros if it is of good quality.”

Blue spruce (12 to 16 euros per linear meter) and red spruce (9 to 12 euros per meter) are even cheaper.
