City of Hope Opens Orange County’s First Dedicated cancer Specialty Hospital

A new,state-of-the-art facility in Irvine,california,expands access to comprehensive cancer care for over 3.2 million residents.

City of Hope Orange County celebrated the grand opening of its new cancer specialty hospital in late November, welcoming its first patients on December 1. The 164,000-square-foot facility, offering 73 beds across six stories, represents a significant expansion of the institution’s commitment to cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship within Orange County.

The new hospital is situated on a 72-acre academic research campus designed specifically to advance cancer care. It will operate in direct connection with the existing City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center, leveraging a comprehensive suite of technologies for cancer screening and treatment. Together,these facilities form the Irvine Academic research Campus,providing patients with fully integrated,multidisciplinary care in a single location.

“A beacon of hope, created for and with the community it serves, this place stands as proof that when people come together with courage and conviction, dreams once thought unachievable can become real,” stated a senior official from City of Hope Orange County.

The CEO of City of Hope, Robert Stone, added, “This is what it looks like when a community decides that hope will live here.We are expanding access to leading-edge treatments, to lifechanging and lifesaving expertise. we are breaking down barriers and showing that hope is within reach in community after community; and it all started here, in Orange County.”

A Human-Centered Approach to Healing

The hospital’s design prioritizes patient well-being through a hospitality-inspired, human-centered approach. Patient spaces are thoughtfully designed to promote dignity and comfort, featuring ensuite bathrooms, concealed clinical utilities, and large windows offering views of the surrounding mountains. Calming color palettes and carefully selected amenities further contribute to a healing surroundings.

Treatment areas include intensive care and medical-surgical units, alongside dedicated operating and procedure rooms. A specialized Evaluation and Treatment Center is also included, offering immediate assessment and care, reducing the need for patients to seek emergency room services for urgent needs.

Expanding Cancer Care in Orange County

Since 2020, City of Hope Orange County has already provided care to over 40,000 patients. This new campus will allow the organization to considerably expand its capabilities, delivering breakthrough acute care, trailblazing research, advanced surgical oncology, and comprehensive support services – including rehabilitative, integrative, and spiritual care.

The campus will support a team of more than 100 highly specialized surgeons, physicians, and researchers with expertise across all cancer types. .

During the grand opening ceremony, patient Joanna Mendez shared her experience, stating, “To the future and current patients who will walk through these doors: know that you’re not alone. This place will hold you, lift you, and fight with you every step of the way; and like me, you will find strength, compassion, and healing within these walls.”

The project was completed in collaboration with the architectural firm HOK and the construction company Hensel Phelps. The opening of this new facility marks a pivotal moment in cancer care for Orange County, offering a renewed sense of hope and access to world-class treatment for those facing the disease.
