“Clan management”, conflicts, silence: diving into French adapted sport amidst a zone of turbulence

by Laura Richards – Editor-in-Chief

On August 26, Charles-Antoine Kouakou lit the Paralympic cauldron of the Paris 2024 Games and shed an almost unexpected light on the entity to which he is affiliated: the French Federation of Adapted Sports (FFSA). Unlike the four paraathletes who accompanied him, Charles-Antoine’s handicap, the mental deficit, is invisible, and athletes in his category are only a small minority in the Paralympic universe.

In Paris there were only six mentally retarded Frenchmen competing for a single medal. “CAK”, who made history at Tokyo 2020 by becoming the first FFSA Paralympic champion, failed to repeat his feat. Despite all the talent and hopes placed in him, since 2021 many voices have been raised to denounce the lack of support received from his federation in the preparation for Paris 2024.
