The global fire season has accelerated at an unprecedented pace, with researchers warning that the world is staring down a “particularly severe year” of wildfires. Fueled by a combination of long-term climate change and a looming “super” El Niño, the first few months of 2026 have already shattered previous records for burnt land, leaving ecologists and health officials on high alert.
Data released Tuesday by World Weather Attribution (WWA), a network of international climate scientists, reveals that wildfires have already scorched 50% more land than the seasonal average. More alarmingly, the total area burned globally is currently over 20% higher than the previous record set since systematic tracking began in 2012.
The crisis is not uniform but is hitting specific regions with devastating intensity. West Africa and the Sahel have seen record-breaking burn areas across nearly every country in the region, while Asia—specifically India, Southeast Asia and northeastern China—has experienced outbreaks that have burned nearly 40% more land than any previous record year. The United States and Australia are also reporting unseasonably high levels of destruction.
The phenomenon of ‘hydroclimate whiplash’
One of the most concerning drivers of this year’s volatility is a process known as “hydroclimate whiplash”—the rapid, violent transition between opposite weather extremes. In West Africa, this cycle has created a lethal combination of fuel and heat.

According to Theodore Keeping, an extreme weather researcher at Imperial College London and a member of WWA, the region experienced unusually high seasonal rainfall during the last growing season. This moisture triggered a surge in grass growth, which, under normal circumstances, would be a sign of ecological health. Instead, it provided a massive amount of “kindling” for the fires to follow.
When the rains stopped, they were replaced by severe droughts and intense heat waves. This swing turned lush, generally fire-resistant areas into tinderboxes. “The severe droughts and heat waves we’ve seen over the last few months have meant that fires are more likely to occur in lusher, generally less fire-prone areas,” Keeping noted.

A ‘super’ El Niño looms
While the early-year data is sobering, scientists warn that the worst may be yet to come. Forecasts indicate a 61% chance that a strong El Niño will emerge between May and July, potentially remaining active through the end of the year or longer.
El Niño, the warm phase of a natural climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean, typically disrupts global weather by shifting trade winds and raising ocean temperatures. For 2026, the projections are extreme: water temperatures in the central equatorial Pacific are forecast to reach or exceed 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) above average in the second half of the year.
“The likelihood of harmful extreme fires potentially could be the highest we’ve seen in recent history if a strong El Niño does develop,” Keeping warned.
The hidden health crisis: PM2.5 and air quality
Beyond the immediate destruction of property and habitat, medical professionals are highlighting a secondary, invisible crisis: the toxicity of wildfire smoke. Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, Executive Director of the Sunway Center for Planetary Health at Sunway University in Malaysia, emphasizes that wildfire smoke is fundamentally different from urban smog.
The fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, found in wildfire smoke can be up to 10 times more harmful to human health than emissions from road traffic. These tiny particles penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, exacerbating cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
This health risk is underscored by a 2024 study published in The Lancet, which linked 1.5 million annual deaths to air pollution. The study suggests these figures will climb as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of global wildfires, turning a seasonal weather event into a permanent public health emergency.
Climate change as the ‘turbocharger’
Despite the looming El Niño, climate scientists are careful to distinguish between natural cycles and human-induced warming. Friederike Otto, a climate science professor at Imperial College London and co-founder of WWA, argues that while El Niño is a catalyst, the underlying cause is the warming baseline of the planet.

El Niño occurs naturally, but it is now operating on top of decades of accumulated greenhouse gas concentrations. This “compounding” effect means that natural oscillations are amplified. Otto points to recent extreme weather events—such as the wildfires in Europe and droughts in Syria and Iran—where El Niño played no role, yet the intensity was driven by planetary heating.
The evidence suggests that human-induced climate change has already “overtaken the signal” of natural cooling patterns. This was evidenced in Australia, which saw record-breaking heat even while La Niña—the cooling counterpart to El Niño—was still active.
“Climate change is the reason to freak out,” Otto said, suggesting that the only constructive response is to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and invest heavily in adaptation technologies.
