Schalke 04 had big goals after being relegated from the Bundesliga. The Royal Blues actually wanted to get promoted straight away – but things turned out differently. Things could also get tight for coach Karel Geraerts.
As “Bild” reports, the Belgian will probably have to fear for his job if the game on Sunday against Karlsruher SC (from 1.30 p.m. in the t-online live ticker) is lost. The 42-year-old recently said: “I’m not afraid of what could happen.”
Interim coach could then take over
But the club does. He wants to avoid relegation to the 3rd league at all costs. According to the newspaper, it would also be conceivable that if Geraerts was fired, an interim coach could take over for the rest of the season. “Bild” cited Mike Büskens as an example.
The current assistant coach took over the coaching position from March to June 2022 and managed direct promotion back to the Bundesliga with Schalke as second division champions. However, it is unclear whether Büskens would want to try a rescue operation again in the current situation – in this case avoiding relegation.
Those in charge at the Royal Blues are currently trying to initiate a change. In addition to the young boss Matthias Schober, the technical director André Hechelmann also had to leave a few weeks ago. It is also already clear that club legend Gerald Asamoah will have to leave the club at the end of the season.
