Cobie Smulders Open to “How I met Your Mother” Revival, Reflects on Emotional “How I Met Your Father” Cameo
Despite the cancellation of the spin-off series, and a somewhat controversial finale to the original, the door remains open for a potential return to the world of “How I Met Your Mother,” with Cobie smulders expressing willingness to reprise her role as Robin Scherbatsky.
The recent Hulu series, “How I Met Your Father,” offered a poignant bridge between the two shows when Robin Scherbatsky made a cameo appearance in the Season 1 finale. The scene, featuring a chance encounter with Sophie Tompkins (Hilary Duff) at MacLaren’s Pub, saw robin offering encouragement to chase romantic dreams. Though, returning to the iconic setting proved unexpectedly emotional for Smulders.
“To walk into that bar again was very emotional,” Smulders told The hollywood Reporter. “The set department did such an amazing job. I was like, ‘Is this it?’ They’re like, ‘It’s not exactly it, but we were able to find some of the things,’ and it looked and felt [the same], except I was alone without my original friends.” The experience was further enhanced by the presence of Pamela Fryman, the director behind many episodes of “How I Met Your Mother,” who also helmed the spin-off episode. “So, it felt like a weird sort of flashback,” Smulders added, “but also kind of lonely, but it was really fun.”
The crossover wasn’t limited to Smulders, as Neil Patrick Harris also reprised his role as Barney Stinson in the second season of “how I Met Your Father.” Unfortunately, the series was canceled by Hulu after just two seasons, curtailing any further opportunities for these beloved characters to interact.
Why did “How I Met your Father” end? The Hulu series was canceled after two seasons due to low viewership numbers, despite efforts to recapture the magic of the original. Hulu announced the cancellation in February 2023, leaving fans disappointed and ending any immediate plans for further crossovers.
Despite this setback, Smulders remains open to revisiting the role of Robin Scherbatsky should the possibility arise. While acknowledging the nine-year run of the original series was a gift in itself, she hasn’t dismissed the possibility of a revival. “I am not in conversations with anyone about [a revival],” Smulders
I feel like asking for anything more than that is like asking for too much.”
Though, the actor also expressed a strong desire to reunite with her former co-stars. “If people wanted to get back together, if there was interest for it, if it all worked out, of course I would,” she stated. “I want to hang out with those people all the time.” The future of the franchise remains uncertain following the cancellation of “How I Met Your Father,” but Smulders’ willingness suggests that fans haven’t seen the last of Robin Scherbatsky.
