Cocaine Use in the UK Surpasses US and Israel

The UK has been revealed to have the second highest rate of cocaine use in the world, shocking many experts and officials. According to recent data, one in 40 adults in the UK, or 2.7 percent, uses the drug, placing the UK above the US and Israel in terms of cocaine consumption.

In contrast, 2.4 percent of American adults use the drug, putting the US in fifth place after Austria and Spain. Experts believe that the high rate of cocaine use in the UK is influenced by a culture of excessive drinking, with many individuals turning to the stimulant to counteract the sedative effects of alcohol.

The geographic proximity of the US to Mexico has also made access to cocaine relatively easy and cheap for Americans. The increasing affordability and availability of the drug has contributed to the rise in consumption in the US.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) compiled a global table of cocaine use based on data from 36 countries. The report highlights the concerning link between drug use and pressing health and social issues, such as mental health problems, self-harm, homelessness, and exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

Separate figures from the Office for National Statistics in the UK have revealed a staggering eightfold increase in deaths involving cocaine over the past decade, with numbers rising for ten consecutive years.

The data paints a concerning picture of the impact of cocaine use on public health and highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to address drug use and its associated ramifications.
