COLA Increased Checks: How Do Social Security Beneficiaries Receive Their Payments?

Most beneficiaries of Social Security programs receive their monthly checks through direct deposit o electronic transfer.

When the Social Security Administration (SSA) announces the schedule of payment arrival dates, it basically refers to the day when people will see funds reflected in their accounts or Direct Express® debit cards.

Since March 1, 2013, a new law establishes that payments will be made electronicallybecause the process is safer, faster and more convenient.

“If you did not sign up for electronic payments when you applied for benefits, we encourage you to sign up now. If you continue receiving checks, the United States Department of the Treasury will contact you about meeting the requirement. To learn more about how to switch to electronic payment, visit the website Direct to your account Treasury, or call 1-800-333-1795”, says Social Security on its website.

The Treasury Department grants exceptions in very few cases. In order to obtain an exception, you must contact the agency at 1-855-290-1545. Another option is to print and fill out the exception form* and send it to the address found on the document.

One reason the Government may grant your request is that prove that, due to a mental disability, you cannot manage a bank account or a Direct Express® cardwhich works as a substitute for the bank account.

To switch to electronic payment via direct deposit, you must enable an account through the “my Social Security” application. at ssa.gov, or you can call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).

Those who prefer a Direct Express® debit card

Those who prefer manage your money through the Direct Express® debit card, you can do it without having to open a bank account.

“With the Direct Express® debit card program we will deposit your federal benefit payment directly to the card account. Your monthly benefits will be available on your payday—on time, every time. You can use the card to make purchases, pay bills or get cash at thousands of establishments,” the office specifies.

To sign up to have one of these cards sent to you, you must call 1-877-212-9991.

Sending first checks with increase by COLA 2024

Social Security will begin sending the first checks with the 3.2% COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) increase for 2024 on December 29 to beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.

After this first round, On January 3, SSA will proceed with deposits to people who began receiving funds before May 1997.

Subsequently, the entity will distribute the funds every Wednesday of the month based on the day of birth of the beneficiaries.
