The traditional demand for fish will experience a notable increase. According to studies carried out by the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Authority (AUNAP), Demand is estimated to increase by 6% compared to the previous yearwhich means that Colombians will consume nearly 47,000 tons of fish during the celebration.

The promotion of fish production in the territories and the repopulation of species in 11 departments of the country have been key to this increase in the availability of fishery products. In 2023, aquaculture production reached 200,000 tons, while fishing production reached 81 tons, according to data provided by the AUNAP.

To support this important industry, the Ministry of Agriculture implemented a promotion program that provided inputs and equipment for artisanal fishing to more than 3,500 fishermen and marketers, as well as 920 users in the aquaculture sector.

Additionally, as part of the repopulation efforts, fingerlings of different species were introduced into 76 bodies of water located in 11 departments and 41 municipalities in the country.

In this context, ex-combatants dedicated to fish farming have also contributed significantly. Motivated by the Easter season, they reached a production of more than 30 tons of tilapia and cachama ready for distribution.

A notable example is the Ecomún Association, based in Huila, which has stood out for its production of 15 tons of fish. Likewise, in Valle del Cauca, Urabá, Bolívar, Arauca and Norte de Santander, the associative units have generated significant quantities of fish, thus contributing to the strengthening of local economies and the construction of peace in Colombia.

The director of AUNAP, Karen Mejía Piñerez, invited consumers to prefer Colombian products during this season and to ensure that they comply with regulations, such as minimum catch sizes and respect for closed seasons, to guarantee the sustainability of the fishing industry in the country.
