This year, the combat power of Tu-95MS strategic bombers will be increased thanks to new engines, Oleg Bocharov, Deputy Head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, said while visiting UEC-Kuznetsov in Samara.

“This year, under the Tu-95 program, thanks to Kuznetsov, the combat power of our strategic bombers will be doubled,” he said (quote by Interfax).

The official also added that UEC-Kuznetsov is producing new NK-32.02 engines for modernized Tu-160M strategic bombers.

The Tu-95MS strategic missile carrier is designed to destroy the most important targets in remote areas and deep behind enemy lines using nuclear missile weapons. The crew of one aircraft consists of seven people. In 2018, Rostec informed on the work on the engine for the new generation Tu-95MS. It was then about the NK-12MPM developed by ODK-Kuznetsov, a modification of the NK-12MP, the world’s most powerful (15,000 hp) serial turboprop engine. Thanks to the modified engine, the take-off characteristics of the aircraft, its flight range and carrying capacity are increased.

On August 15, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced the planned flight of two Tu-95MS over the Sea of Japan. In July, Tu-95MS patrolled near the western coast of Alaska over the neutral waters of the Bering Sea, and in June – over the Barents and Norwegian Seas.
