A Comet Unlike Any Other

This suggests a relatively direct trajectory, rather than a long, looping orbit.
Close Approaches and Viewing Opportunities
The comet made its closest approach to Earth on December 19, 2025, at a distance of 270 million kilometers (1.8 astronomical units). Its closest approach to the Sun, known as perihelion, occurred on October 29, at a distance of 203 million kilometers (1.36 AU).
Despite its proximity, observing 3I/ATLAS presents a challenge. As one source noted, it’s a “tricky object due to its low brightness.” However, it remains within reach of smaller smart telescopes and dedicated imaging setups.
On January 1, 2026, the comet is predicted to have a magnitude of +15.6, making it best suited for astrophotography. Observers can find it approximately 2.5° north of the star Omicron (ο) Leonis, rising around 20° above the eastern horizon at 22:00 UT and reaching an altitude of 52° when due south at 03:00 UT.
