The show, after a year of pandemic, will not be what was originally planned, but it will be there and it will be, like every time, unforgettable. The Compagnia della Fortezza presents from 25 July to 1 August (3 pm and in repetition at 5 pm, subject to authorization by 19 July), the III framework of the Naturae show – the valley of annihilation dramaturgy and direction by Armando Punzo, in the Medici Fortress headquarters of the Volterra Prison. The saga, which began with the first play on Shakespeare in 2015, tells Armando Punzo it was supposed to end in 2021 with the last act of Naturae, but the pandemic forced the company to stop work at the beginning of March and to resume it at the end of May. The time left was too short to make the finale as it had been imagined for years. Therefore this spectacle will not be a landing place but the necessary threshold to cross before reaching the eighth valley in the next year.
The theatrical performance is part of the Naturae 2021 project which includes master classes, installations, exhibitions, meetings, talks, in other places besides the Fortress and the inauguration of an archive that contains the Company’s 30-year history. This summer project focus explains Cinzia de Felice, organizational director of the project was born at the end of a long and complex period inevitably marked by the pandemic, which has put a strain on the whole world of culture and theater, but which we have faced with energy. and the usual enthusiasm, as a further challenge to be faced and a new limit to be overcome.
It starts on 27 July at the Parco Fiumi Anti Social Social Park (6.30 pm) with Per un Teatro Stabile in the Volterra Prison, a meeting to talk about the project, which was started, for the construction of a theater inside the Medici Fortress, which will serve to host all the cultural and educational activities of the Compagnia della Fortezza but will also be open to the external community. On 28 July at the Guarnacci Library (6.30 pm) the Historical Archive of the Compagnia della Fortezza will be inaugurated with manuscript workbooks, scripts, sound and video recordings, photographs, posters, posters and room programs, press reviews, administrative documents) collected in 34 years of activity which constitutes an essential source for the study of the main theatrical experience carried out in the prison field in Italy and in the world.
On the occasion of the inauguration, “Inside the story” will be presented a photographic video installation by Stefano Vaja (6.30 pm), historical photographer of the Compagnia della Fortezza, who tells in hundreds of scene images, behind the scenes and of life lived, during the past 30 years of life, the true story of one of the most unique and surprising theatrical companies in the world. On 29 July at the Centro Studi Maria Maddalena (6.30 pm) the project Per Aspera ad Astra will be presented, how to reconfigure the prison through culture and beauty – IV edition which again this year saw a Masterclass as the first important action of the project ( 23 July / 1 August) promoted with a national call involving 25 selected operators from all over Italy who arrived in Volterra to train at the Fortezza school during the stages of setting up and staging the new show. On July 30 at the Parco Fiumi Anti Social Social Park (6.30 pm) there will be the talk “What is theater for?” curated by Oliviero Ponte Di Pino, a series of meetings that puts the live show in relation with other spheres, disciplines and sectors of society.
The Company is the protagonist of the over one hundred images, disseminated in the village of Lajatico of the NATURAE exhibition – the Company of the Fortress in the Salina di Volterra (until June 2022), a collective photographic installation, which is a story-report of the Naturae show. The valley of innocence, a great site-specific event of the Fortress, presented in August 2020 in the Nervi Pavilion of Salina Locatelli in Saline di Volterra, as the final act of the three-year project # TRENTANNIDIFORTEZZA.
