Conan O’Brien: ‘F Trump’ Comics Now ‘Just Screaming’

Conan O’Brien Argues Trump’s Outlandishness Has Undermined Political Comedy

Comedian Conan O’Brien contends that the focus on simply denouncing former President Donald Trump has diminished the art of political satire, prioritizing anger over genuine humor.

During a recent interview with the oxford Union on Tuesday, the former late-night host explained his concerns about the current state of comedy in the age of Trump, arguing that both the former president’s behavior and the reaction to it have proven detrimental to the craft. O’Brien believes Trump’s unpredictable nature made effective satire arduous, while the prevalent practice of simply attacking him has robbed comedians of their most potent tool: wit.

“Some comics go the route of I’m going to just say ‘F Trump’ all the time or that’s their comedy,” O’Brien stated. “And I think well now…you’re being co-opted as you’re so angry. You’ve been lulled. It’s like a siren leading you into the rocks. You’ve been lulled into just saying ‘F trump. F Trump.F Trump. Screw this guy.’ And I think you’ve now put down your best weapon, which is being funny, and you’ve exchanged it for anger.”

O’Brien emphasized that a comedian’s primary function is to be funny, even when addressing serious political issues. He argued that channeling anger into humor is a more effective weapon against power than mere outrage. “And that person or any person like that would say, ‘Well, things are too serious now.I don’t need to be funny.’ And I think, well, if you’re a comedian, you always need to be funny. You just have to find a way. And you just have to find a way to channel that anger into a way…as good art will always be a great weapon, will always be a perfect weapon against power. But if you’re just screaming and you’re just angry, you’ve lost your best tool in the toolbox.”

The comedian acknowledged the complexities of addressing political issues through comedy, describing it as a “tricky” situation. While he admitted to holding “very strong political feelings and views,” he maintained that his comedy operates on a more instinctive level. “In a way, it is there’s so much of what I’ve done in my life that’s impulse,” he explained.

This isn’t the first time O’Brien has voiced these concerns. He previously criticized the trend of simply labeling Trump an “a-hole” in 2023, asserting that the former president had fundamentally altered the landscape of political comedy. “I’m really going on a limb here saying that’s his greatest crime,” O’Brien said at the time. “I think he’s hurt political comedy by being so outlandish himself. I think the January 6 thing is a blip compared to how much he’s hurt comedy.”

During the oxford Union interview, O’Brien also expressed his political views on other current events, accusing FCC Chairman Brendan Carr of improperly influencing a brief suspension of Jimmy kimmel. He further satirized Trump’s reported plans to construct a ballroom, quipping that the former president intends to demolish portions of the White House to replicate Mar-a-Lago.
