Peruvian President José jerà has condemned the violent actions of Congresswoman kira Alcarraz, who is now facing an ethics investigation following a physical altercation with a Lima Tax Administration Service (SAT) worker on January 5. The incident, captured on video, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.
the confrontation occurred near the Atocongo bridge in San Juan de Miraflores, as the SAT conducted an operation to identify vehicles with outstanding debts. According to reports, Alcarraz was a passenger in a vehicle subject to an “arrest warrant” due to an unpaid traffic violation. When the SAT agent attempted to intervene, Alcarraz allegedly attacked the official, seizing their cell phone and obstructing the process. She also reportedly contacted a purported police colonel in an attempt to influence the situation.
Presidential rebuke and Calls for Restraint
President JerĂ addressed the incident on Monday, describing Alcarraz’s behavior as “regrettable” and emphasizing the importance of proper conduct for public officials. “I think it has been a regrettable moment,” JerĂ stated. “I think she has not been able to properly control the situation.this type of behavior, as authorities, should not occur. We have to aspire to have adequate and correct behavior.”
However, the President also suggested a need to consider the circumstances surrounding the incident, stating, “We must also understand the moments in which the congresswoman was surely in.” He ultimately deferred any disciplinary action to the Peruvian Congress, noting that “the corresponding actions are left in Congress.”
Ethics Committee Launches Investigation
Responding to the public outcry, the Ethics Commission of the Peruvian Congress unanimously approved an ex officio investigation into Alcarraz’s conduct on Monday. Elvis Vergara, president of the commission, assured the public that the investigation woudl proceed swiftly and according to established regulations.
“We have to respect the deadlines that correspond to the Ethics Commission according to the regulations we have,” Vergara explained. “Those deadlines are five business days, after having notified the congresswoman [Alcarraz], for her to present her defenses.Once the defenses have been collected,we also have, for the hearing that has to undergo this process, five more days and another five days to vote on the report.” This timeline suggests a preliminary report could be issued within approximately two weeks.
The incident raises serious questions about the conduct of elected officials and the rule of law in Peru. While the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring accountability and upholding the standards of behavior expected of those in positions of power.
