“Actually, a shadow image of the Masaryk Oncology Institute will emerge,” said the minister. It is an independent contributory organization of the Ministry, the center in Motola will be part of the university hospital there. “I want these two centers to become European Union centers of excellence as soon as possible,” he added that they would then have the opportunity to draw on large European grants as well.

They will be in the new building, which must be fully operational by the beginning of July 2026 due to European funding rules state-of-the-art equipment, including two linear accelerators for radiation, an inpatient oncology department with 60 beds, 22 outpatient clinics and a day care unit for the administration of chemotherapy to up to 84 patients. Counseling for a healthy lifestyle, movement and eating, smoking cessation or psychological assistance to patients and families should also be included.

The director of the hospital, Miloslav Ludvík, admitted that staffing the new workplaces will not be easy. The hospital is therefore starting to plan recruitment now. “The problem is that now they are graduating from the weakest grades,” he added. According to Tomáš Büchler, head of the Motol Oncology Clinic, the center’s ambition is to attract the highest quality experts, including international scientific teams.

The advantage over other hospitals should be the connection with the research facility, which was supported by 500 million crowns from The Kellner Family Foundation. Ludvík recalled that, according to the original plans, a building for the treatment of adults was supposed to stand next to the current pediatric oncology building. “Only part of it was built because the money ran out and the care changed,” he described.

According to him, the new center should also bring a change in care. “We will tailor care to each patient,” said Ludvík. The environment should also be more pleasant, according to him, the patients will hardly recognize that they are in the hospital and they will have a view of the greenery during the application of chemotherapy.

The rarest tumors and science

The minister appreciated that Motol was ready for European money and had an approved zoning decision and building permit. He recalled the project at the University Hospital of Královské Vinohrady, which was supposed to cost almost seven billion kroner, did not have a ready project or land. In June 2021, the then Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) presented the project as the Czech Oncology Institute.

According to Válek, the construction of the Prague center will complete the system of organization of care for cancer patients. The rarest tumors and science will be concentrated in two centers in Prague and Brno, while comprehensive oncology centers (KOC) will care for patients in every region except Central Bohemia. Part of the care will also be taken over by district hospitals, which will work closely with KOC.
