India’s Foreign ‍Minister S Jaishankar spoke to his British counterpart regarding former‌ Bangladesh Prime Minister ⁣Sheikh Hasina Wajid. He apologized, stating‌ that ‍there is no legal basis in their ⁢law⁢ to grant temporary political⁣ asylum.

Last Monday, Sheikh Hasina Wajid resigned and fled ⁣to India.‍ She is currently staying⁢ in India,​ and the Indian government is making preparations for her‌ longer‍ stay. The⁢ Indian Ministry‍ of External Affairs has said that S. Jaishankar has discussed ⁢the situation in Bangladesh and the future of⁣ Sheikh Hasina with his British counterpart, David Lemmy.

Neither India nor Britain has ‍made any official decision or commitment regarding the future of ‌Sheikh Hasina. British Home Office sources told the Press Trust of India that ⁢UK immigration laws do not allow‍ anyone to travel to⁢ the UK to seek ​asylum.

This week,⁤ S. Jaishankar told Parliament that Sheikh Hasina was only permitted to enter India for a temporary stay. It is important to ‌note that‍ Sheikh Hasina is accompanied by her younger sister Sheikh Rehana,⁤ who‍ is a British citizen, while her daughter Taup ⁢Siddiq is a member of the British Parliament.

The ​Indian Ministry of External Affairs has also stated that approximately ⁢10,000 Indians are currently ​in ‍Bangladesh, many of whom have gained access to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka to facilitate their return⁣ home.
