“That the ELN attributes it to them is a gesture of responsibility to clarify the situation there will be time for them to be sanctioned. At least that recognition is a base against many phenomena that remain in impunity from the beginning, because nobody attributes them to them,” said Rueda.
And it is that in the last hours, through a statement, The ELN guerrilla claimed responsibility for the attack with explosives last Wednesday in Tibú, North of Santander. This illegal group confirmed that they were the responsible for activating a minefield when a National Police patrol was advancing.
“The most recent action takes place in the municipal capital of Tibú, Norte de Santander, where on May 24 units belonging to the war front activated mining to advance the passage of a National Police patrol, which was moving in a vehicle of the institution, leaving as a balance four police officers killed and five more injured,” the statement read.
According to the ELN, the attack was carried out due to “intimidation” by the Police and the Army, generating anxiety in the community.
“The national government is obliged to explain to the people of the border the type of operations that its security agencies have been carrying out in the territory, which threatens human rights and brings terror to the memory of the population and death caused by the Army and the Police during the governments of Andrés Pastrana and Álvaro Uribe Vélez”, they added, pointing out paramilitary activities.
In addition to explaining his reasons for attacking the uniformed officers, the ELN regretted the death of the woman who was near the scene of the attack and assured that the purpose was not to affect civilians.
The solution for Rueda is “to agree on a ceasefire as soon as possible and prevent these situations from happening again.”
