The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) confirmed today, Friday, that 1.6 billion students have been affected as a result of school closures due to Corona.

The United Nations Organization for the Rights of the Child said, “There is no alternative to in-person learning, and schools must reopen as soon as possible. However, the global school closure crisis has highlighted the need for flexible educational systems, with distance learning options, and for access to them to be available to all.”

She stated that “even before the Corona pandemic, the world was going through a learning crisis, as 53% of children in low- and middle-income countries were unable to read simple text by the age of ten, announcing that this rate is expected to rise to 63% due to school closures.”

The organization stressed that “the effects of this matter on children in low- and middle-income countries will be more severe, given their lower levels of learning even before the pandemic, lack of access to technology for distance learning, and longer periods of school closures.”
