Corona: The unique symptom of the omicron variant that appears only at night

by time news

The Omicron variant has provided quite a bit of cause for concern in recent weeks. Now, doctors around the world are reporting that the new version is causing people to experience a strange symptom, which only occurs at night. British doctor Dr Amir Khan, who works with the UK National Health Service, recently described a symptom that could be unique to the omicron variant compared to other strains of corona (or other viruses), and that is – night sweats.

According to Dr. Khan, the symptoms of omicron infection are a sore throat, mild muscle aches, extreme fatigue, dry cough and night sweats. He noted that the night sweats his patients reported were the kind that would make a person “get up and change clothes.”

This will not be the first time experts have seen excessive sweating at night among corona patients. This month, a group of researchers from South Africa also noted that 114 people out of 212 study participants reported “multiple sweats” while 102 of them reported experiencing “night sweats” while battling the virus. The researchers in this case did not focus on what causes patients to experience night sweats. Instead, they sought to determine whether patients’ sweat was capable of transmitting the virus to another person. After analyzing their data, they discovered that this body fluid is not contagious.

Another study published by Guizhou University People’s Hospital in China last year suggested that night sweats may be Corona’s first symptom. The report may not have been supported by extensive evidence, but nonetheless, some medical experts have since recognized night sweats as one of the symptoms of corona infection.

Compared to the Delta version, recent studies show that the omicron causes only the mild form of COVID-19. Dr Angelique Coetzee, the South African doctor who first identified the new version that appeared, said most omicron patients showed “extremely mild symptoms” of the infection.
