The arrests follow the discovery of blasting gravel in the engine blocks of several corvettes, sparking an international investigation.
- Two port workers are in custody, accused of deliberately damaging German warships.
- Investigators found evidence of sabotage including blasting gravel, damaged fuel lines, and disabled electronics.
- The investigation extends beyond Germany, with searches conducted in Romania and Greece.
- Navy officials had previously warned of potential sabotage attempts on German vessels.
The suspects, both employed at the port, allegedly tampered with multiple corvettes last year. The ships were undergoing work at a shipyard facility. the public prosecutor’s office stated the investigation will also explore the possibility of outside actors commissioning the sabotage.
What kind of damage was inflicted on the ships?
The accused are alleged to have introduced over 20 kilograms of blasting gravel into the engine block of at least one ship,a move designed to cause catastrophic damage during operation.
The investigation suggests the two suspects acted alone, suggesting a larger network may be involved. The investigation is examining “the question of possible clients of the accused,” according to the public prosecutor’s office. A spokesperson declined to provide further details, stating, “The investigation into this is ongoing.”
Searches were conducted at apartments in Hamburg, Romania, and Greece. The investigation involved collaboration between the Hamburg State Criminal Police Office, Greek and Romanian law enforcement, and the European judicial authority Eurojust in The Hague.
Previous Warnings of Sabotage
Jan Christian Kaack, the Navy’s inspector, reported in February of last year that there had been multiple instances of purposeful damage to German warships. “There is destruction, i.e.sabotage, on more than one unit,” the vice admiral stated during a public address in Berlin.
What are Corvettes?
corvettes are smaller, multi-purpose warships designed for use against sea and land targets as well as for maritime surveillance, especially in coastal areas. the German Navy decided several years ago to double its fleet of “Braunschweig”-class corvettes from five to ten.The ships, which are around 90 meters long, are being built by the Bremen shipyard group NVL, which also includes the customary Hamburg shipyard Blohm + Voss. The new corvettes will, among other things, be finally equipped there.
Shipyards have taken appropriate measures in response to these concerns. Reports from WDR, NDR, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung indicated that the corvette “Emden,” built by hamburg’s Blohm+Voss shipyard, was a previous target of sabotage. A spokesperson for the Attorney General’s Office confirmed that the events surrounding the “Emden” are part of the ongoing investigation, though the current arrest warrant relates to a separate incident.
