The saying never two without three did not come true this Tuesday evening at Stade Bonal. After having eliminated two Ligue 1 clubs in the previous rounds, Lorient (2-1) and Reims (2-2, 5-4 on penalties), FC Sochaux, resident of the National (3rd national level), since its relegation administrative last summer, surrendered in the face of ruthless Rennais.

The dream of a new exploit was short-lived for the Franche-Comté club. Despite the exit of Enzo Le Fée due to injury (4th), the Bretons opened the scoring with Amine Gouiri, with a gem of a shot which ended in the top corner of Mathieu Patouillet (24th). The Sochaux goalkeeper, who had delayed the deadline a few moments earlier in front of Arnaud Kalimuendo (17th), lost again to Ibrahim Salah, author of a magnificent volley (0-2, 29th).

Sochaux’s nightmare does not end with a third Breton goal from Kalimuendo, who benefits from the generosity of the Lionceaux (0-3, 35th). After the double from the Rennes international hopeful (41st), the mass is said in the first half.

Intractable at the moment (after a series of seven games without defeat), the Bretons are playing after the break. Barely two minutes after leaving the locker room, Amine Gouiri also scored his double (0-5, 47th). Sochaux saves the honor with a penalty from Malcolm Viltard, who wrong-foots Gallon (1-5, 64th). The last word goes to Benjamin Bourigeaud who further increases the success of Stade Rennais (1-6, 82nd).

Rennes is the first to qualify for the quarter-finals and will be accompanied by the winner of the other seven matches which will take place between Wednesday and Thursday.
