The leadership of the regions of the Russian Federation will soon gather to discuss the strategy to combat the coronavirus. This was announced on Tuesday, January 11, by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin at a meeting of the presidium of the government’s coordinating council to counter the spread of a new type of virus. “In the near future, we will talk in detail with the regions on all aspects of the fight against coronavirus. We will specially meet for this,” Mishustin said.

Daily Growth Could Reach Six Digits

Meanwhile, the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova said that in case of “non-compliance with the requirements” and an unfavorable development of the situation with the spread of the omicron variant, the indicator of the daily increase of new infected in Russia could reach six-digit values. According to Popova, “Russian epidemiological scientists, mathematicians and analysts have developed approaches to predicting the development of the epidemiological situation.” We are talking about “both short-term and long-term and optimistic and pessimistic” scenarios, she added.

The daily maximum of new infections was recorded on November 6, 2021, when 41,335 cases were detected, Interfax recalled.

The head of Rospotrebnadzor urged to prepare for a negative scenario, since the omicron-mutation of the coronavirus is “more infectious than all of its previous versions.”

The mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, also predicted that a significant increase in the incidence is expected in Moscow within 7-10 days due to the spread of a new mutation.

In Russia, 305 cases of infection with the omicron variant have been identified; it has been registered in 13 regions, including Moscow, the Moscow region and St. Petersburg, Popova said. According to her, two outbreaks were registered in student hostels in the regions of the Russian Federation. At the same time, “imported” cases are registered – from the UAE, Great Britain, Turkey. “Tight control over citizens who return from South Africa and Tanzania, who are undergoing complete quarantine, also shows a high detection rate among such travelers,” Popova added.

Vaccination rates fell during the holidays

Meanwhile, over the holidays in Russia, 759 thousand people were vaccinated and revaccinated against coronavirus, about 70 thousand were vaccinated per day, which is several times less than before the New Year, said the head of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation Mikhail Murashko.

During the day in Russia, 17,525 new cases of infection were detected in 84 regions, the operational headquarters said. The number of deaths from COVID-19 in 24 hours was 783. The number of cases for the entire time of the pandemic in the Russian Federation reached 10 684 204, 317 687 people died.
