There are over 5.3 million new ones Covid-19 cases recorded globally in the week of August 15 to 21, 9% less than the previous week. The drop in deaths is even more decisive, -15%, with about 14,000 deaths reported. These are the data of the weekly epidemiological update of the World Health Organization.
As of August 21, 2022, 593 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 6.4 million deaths have been reported globally.
At the regional level, the number of new cases reported weekly decreased or remained stable in all six WHO regions. In particular, the African region marks -25%, the European region -20% and the Americas -18%. The United States (2,714, down 13%), Japan (1,624, -1%), Brazil (1,105, -26%), Italy (677, -26%) and Australia (490, -9%).
