Criticism of ‘Look how they run’ (2022): List of suspects

by time news

Seen from a distance, ‘Look how they run’ brings together ingredients to be a total enjoyment for lovers of classic detective intrigues. It has a bubbly gallery of suspects, a wrap of slightly ironic humor, glamorous sets and a continuous homage to the great Agatha Christie: the film is part of the celebration of the 100th performance of ‘The Mousetrap’, finished off with a corpse, real and bloodied, sitting on the stage sofa, while the cast of the play puts on a poker face in the stalls.

It could have been a festival of the genre, but you have to surrender to the evidence that it falls a few steps below. The mentions of Agatha Christie’s work are forced (and her physical appearance, disappointing), her humor is only sometimes funny, everything seems too calculated and, above all, mortal sin, it does not intrigue! Her mystery plot is losing strength, making us not care who the murderer is in the end. It seems that two guys from the TV series, the director Tom George and the screenwriter Mark Chapell, deep down had assumed what is ironically verbalized in the film itself, that all mystery stories are the same, that they always kill the most unpleasant character and the culprit ends up being the dumbest.

In short, ‘Look how they run’ could be better and it loses its initial effervescence, but it still works as light entertainment, full of games and references, not without some sparks of intelligence. And with one of those characters that is worth an entire movie, that of the inexperienced, enthusiastic and hasty Scotland Yard agent (adorable Saoirse Ronan) who writes everything down in her notebook, to the despair of the apathetic and hard-drinking detective played by Sam Rockwell .
