A group of 28 Cuban rafters was rescued on the high seas by an international cruise ship last Monday, April 22, according to sources from the National Migration Institute (INM).

Among those rescued were 27 adults – 18 men and nine women – and one unaccompanied teenager.

The entity adds that the cruise crew handed the migrants over to the INM staff on the island of Cozumel, Quintana Roo, to begin the corresponding immigration administrative process.

This institution, in coordination with International Health of the Ministry of Health, assured that a complete medical examination was carried out on each of these Cuban rafters, as part of the humanitarian protection measures.

Subsequently, they were transferred to Playa del Carmen and then to a provisional INM station in Cancún, where they will receive accommodation and care while their immigration situation is resolved.

“The adolescent was channeled to the municipal System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family (DIF), in the Casa Filtro shelter, so that protection measures can be issued and the plan for the restitution of rights can be determined,” reads the statement from the National Migration Institute.
