Australia Bolsters Ashes Lineup with Cummins and Lyon for Crucial Third Test

Australia will field their strongest team of the Ashes series to date, aiming to regain momentum against England in the third Test, commencing Wednesday in Adelaide. The return of captain Pat Cummins and star spinner Nathan Lyon signifies a significant shift in strategy as the hosts seek to capitalize on home advantage.

Australia’s squad has been reshaped following the first two matches of the series. Cummins, sidelined for five months due to a lower back injury, has demonstrated full bowling capacity in recent net sessions and was nearly fit for the previous Test in Brisbane. Lyon, notably, expressed his frustration – stating he was “absolutely filthy” – after being omitted from the Brisbane Test for a strategic all-seam attack suited to the pink-ball conditions.

The decision to reinstate both key players means Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett will make way. Remarkably, the remainder of the Australian XI remains unchanged, signaling a firm commitment to the current batting order. This also means a continued absence for Usman Khawaja, who continues to recover from a back problem sustained during the first match in Perth. Khawaja’s potential future in the series remains uncertain, particularly as he approaches his 39th birthday on Thursday.

Travis Head’s impressive form as a temporary opener in Perth, where he scored a rapid-fire century off 69 balls, has solidified his position. Head boasts an exceptional record at Adelaide, having registered centuries in each of his last three Test appearances at the venue – scoring 125, 122, and 111 runs respectively.

Lyon is anticipated to play a pivotal role on a pitch increasingly favorable to spin bowling. While he only bowled 15.3 overs against West Indies in 2024, his previous five day-time Tests at Adelaide saw him average 64 overs per game, claiming a total of 32 wickets. Damian Hough, the ground’s curator, emphasized the importance of including a spinner, stating, “I don’t want to be the curator at Adelaide where you don’t pick a spinner. Spin needs to play a part here, it always has.”

By contrast, England has opted for Will Jacks, a batting all-rounder whose off-spin has yielded 50 wickets at an average of 42 in 58 first-class matches. England’s rationale centers on bolstering their batting lineup at No. 8, while also seeking a more reliable spin option than the out-of-form Shoaib Bashir. Reflecting on the situation, a senior member of the England team acknowledged Bashir’s disappointment, stating, “It’s disappointing for ‘Bash’ to not get the opportunity later in the series that he thought he was going to, but we didn’t think we’d be in the situation of 2-0 down after two, having to win the [last] three.” The team remains focused on making difficult decisions to maximize their chances of success.

In a somber note, both teams will wear black armbands during the Test to honor the victims of the recent attacks at Bondi Beach.

Australia XI for third Test: Jake Weatherald, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Josh Inglis, Pat Cummins (capt), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland.
